PSD / PSB preview and layers

Open a Photoshop preview or export rasterized layers together. Use PSD / PSB preview and layers locally with practical instructions, output settings and format limits.

A practical guide

PSD / PSB preview and layers

Get a cached merged preview from a PSD or PSB, or export available rasterized layers in a ZIP with their positions. Choose PNG or JPG for the preview and use the layer package for inspection or reuse. Photoshop-specific effects, fonts and adjustments may differ from the original editing environment.

  • Preview a supplied Photoshop document
  • Export raster layer images for inspection
  • Recover layer positions from a packaged manifest

How to use PSD / PSB preview and layers

  1. Choose the Photoshop file

Add one PSD or PSB within the decoded image bounds. For preview mode, the document must include a cached composite saved by its author.

  2. Select preview or layers

Choose merged preview for one image, or Layer PNG ZIP for available raster layer exports. Select PNG or JPG when creating the merged preview.

  3. Export the available pixels

Run Create output. Preview uses the cached composite; layer mode writes raster images and a layers.json manifest with names, positions, visibility and opacity.

  4. Check the intended representation

Download the result and inspect it against your expectations. For layers, use the manifest positions and remember that the PNGs are raster exports rather than editable Photoshop objects.

Understand the settings

Export
Choose export according to the result you need. Available choices: Merged preview; Layer PNG ZIP. The initial selection is Merged preview.
Output format
Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: PNG; JPG. The initial selection is PNG.

Inspecting a design handoff

A designer sends a PSD and a colleague needs its visible composition for review. Choose merged preview and PNG. If the file lacks a cached preview, ask its author to save with compatibility enabled; layer export provides a different representation of available content.

Check your result

Upload a supported file, adjust the settings and create the output. Exports cached merged preview or up to 100 rasterized layers. Photoshop adjustment layers, fonts and effects can differ; text remains rasterized. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

What to know before you start

  • PSD composite and layer exports are supported. PSB is not supported by the browser decoder.
  • Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
  • Exports cached merged preview or up to 100 rasterized layers. Photoshop adjustment layers, fonts and effects can differ; text remains rasterized.
  • Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
  • Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
  • Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.

PSD / PSB preview and layers: common questions

Why can a PSD have no preview?

A PSD may be saved without a cached merged composite. Preview mode requires that stored representation and reports its absence. The author can save the document with Photoshop’s compatibility option enabled to include an appropriate composite preview.

Are text layers still editable?

No. Layer exports are raster PNG images, including any text that can be rasterized from the stored layer content. They do not preserve editable type, Photoshop adjustment controls or the full behaviour of effects and smart objects.

How do I position exported layers?

The ZIP includes layers.json with each exported layer’s bounds and related properties. Use those positions when reconstructing a composition, while reviewing effects and visibility because raster layer exports can differ from Photoshop’s complete final rendering.

How many layers can be exported?

Layer mode permits up to one hundred descendant layers, with additional total pixel and output-size bounds. A document with groups or large raster layers can therefore reach a limit before producing a useful full export.

Does PSD / PSB preview and layers upload files to another service?

Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.

Can I continue after changing pages?
