# PDF to Markdown > Browser-only file conversion. Selected files are processed on this device and are not uploaded to a conversion server. Source: https://localconverter.tech/pdf-markdown Extract selectable PDF text and table structure into a Markdown document for editing or further document conversion. The layout-aware extraction aims to represent reading structure, but complex columns and page design need review. Scanned pages require OCR first, and embedded images are not exported as part of this Markdown workflow. ## Useful tasks - Make an editable Markdown draft from a report - Extract headings and tables for review - Prepare text from a searchable PDF for restructuring ## Steps 1. **Choose a readable PDF**: Upload one working, unprotected PDF with selectable text and up to one hundred pages. If it is a scan, create and review a searchable PDF first. 2. **Check extraction suitability**: No format settings are required for Markdown output. Consider columns, footnotes and complex layouts, since a visual page design may not map neatly into a linear text document. 3. **Create the Markdown draft**: Run Process document to extract layout-aware text and tables. The output is a Markdown file rather than a page rendering or an image asset package. 4. **Review reading structure**: Download and open the Markdown, then compare headings, table rows and paragraph order with the PDF. Correct repeated headers, split words or layout-induced order errors before reuse. ## Settings ## A report section for editing A selectable-text PDF report needs to become an editable draft. Run PDF to Markdown, then inspect headings, lists and tables in the downloaded file. Compare any multi-column sections with the original pages before using the text in a revised document. ## Check the result Choose a file, adjust the settings, then download the result. Layout-aware text and table extraction. Scans need OCR first; reading order and complex layouts need review. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged. ## Limits - Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading. - Layout-aware text and table extraction. Scans need OCR first; reading order and complex layouts need review. - Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB. - Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents. - Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Questions ### Does Markdown preserve exact PDF layout? No. Markdown represents text structure rather than fixed page geometry. Headings and tables may be extracted usefully, but columns, sidebars and visual placement need review when the PDF is converted into a linear editable document. ### Are images included in the output? This workflow does not write or embed PDF images into the Markdown file. Use Extract original PDF images for embedded raster assets, and inspect page renderings separately when understanding the document depends on its visual layout. ### Why does a scanned PDF fail? A scan may contain only page images without selectable text. Run the English OCR tool first to create a searchable PDF, then review recognition before extracting Markdown so that OCR mistakes are not carried into the editable draft. ### Should I review multi-column pages? Yes. Reading order is inferred from layout and can differ from the intended flow in complex pages. Compare column transitions, captions, footnotes and tables with the source before relying on the extracted text for another document. ### Does PDF to Markdown upload files to another service? Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory. ### Can I continue after changing pages? Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Related guides - [Merge PDF](https://localconverter.tech/merge-pdf.md) - [Split PDF](https://localconverter.tech/split-pdf.md) - [Images to PDF](https://localconverter.tech/images-to-pdf.md) - [Reorder PDF pages](https://localconverter.tech/reorder-pdf.md) - [PDF to TXT](https://localconverter.tech/pdf-to-txt.md) - [PDF to PNG](https://localconverter.tech/pdf-to-png.md)
